“What’s the matter,” I asked John, who stood outside of a Dunkin Donuts sipping a coffee.
“My lips are bleeding.”
“No they’re not.”
He bit his bottom lip hard enough to produce a few droplets.
“I have AIDS.”
“Really.”
“Full blown.”
“Get in the truck.”
I took him to the ER. He had just left. I was there last night at midnight when another Providence Rescue brought him in, reason unknown.
All of the phych beds in the state are full, the Chest Pain Unit at Rhode Island Hospital now being used as a holding area. I have no idea where to bring the next one.

They should’ve left out Chest Pain and doubled the size of the CDU when the built the place. Total waste of space. Even when it’s open nobody goes to CP. They either get an Urgent bed or a Critical Care room. I was watching the hospital status board yesterday. Totally ridiculous, all the hospitals playing the diversion game.
Chest Pain area is not for people to be put in directly from triage its for the rule outs that don’t need a full admission to the hospital. Saving the in house beds for other admission, instead of observation patients. The CDU is being replaced, but it is not Rhode Island hospital’s responsibility to house all the intoxicated, and psych. patients. The state is the reason for that problem when they closed the Welcome Arnold to create a vacant parcel. Shame on the politicians who don’t know what they are doing because they sleep in a warm bed at night and do not worry about the homeless….
In my opinion, Rhode Island Hospital, especially the people on the ground, is doing a heroic job keeping the whole thing together. I see morale at an all time low and it worries me. How long can society and the state’s problems be dumped on the ER ? The strain is palpable, I see it on the faces of the people who bear the brunt of the problem.
Hey Mike….how about if we could just start and bring them to the State House, or to the Mayor? I bet they have plenty of room! They could all use the first floor of City Hall.
