With a little luck I’ll have made it through another year. There are still ten plus hours to go in 2008. With an Alberta Clipper roaring through the heart of Providence as I write this, and New Years Eve upon us the chance that those hours will pass uneventfully are slim. I just hope that nobody gets hurt.
December has been a tough month for the People of Providence. A couple of kids were murdered at the downtown clubs, an eleven year old girl fell through a glass top table and bled to death, a six year old died at home for unknown reasons, a dozen stabbings, lots of shots fired and numerous occupied house fires made life difficult for a lot of families.
Members of the Providence Fire Department respond to these and thousands more incidents every year. Lives are saved, property protected and the citizenry of the city kept as safe as possible. I speak for every member of this department when I say I wish we could save them all. God knows, we try. Sometimes everything we have just isn’t enough.
In spite of all this, and the political dissent, outdated equipment and insufficient resources one thing keeps me coming back.
Happy New Year, Brothers and Sisters, and stay safe.
