Disabled?

Nineteen years ago I was in the 42nd Training Acadamy of the Providence Fire Department. Most of us felt blessed to be there, and worked hard, and learned what it took to be a good firefighter.

Some of us already knew everything, and did as little as possible.

I wish I could say that every one of us was honorable, and posessed the qualities that it takes to survive a long productive career as a firefighter. I've seen guys get hurt, and hurt badly. I've seen them get up and finish the job.  I've also seen people take advantage of a system that was designed for disabled firefighters.

I'm a strong believer in Karma. Sometimes it seems that Karma simply isn't working, and everything is upside down.

But in the end, the good guys win. Every time. I'm sure of it.

  • The worst part of scam artists (I'm not making judgments in this particular case) is that they make it harder for people with legitimate injuries to get compensation or payment for care. Every system, public or private, has a small percentage of people who always seem to be out injured or have some sort of trivial appearing injury that ends up being "career ending". Not surprisingly, some of them turn out to be less than 100% legitimate.

I am almost embarrassed to tell people that I was a firefighter that retired due to a disability.  I always get the Oh, Uh Huh!  A little wink. They don't know the pain I am in all the time.  They don't know what its like to be looked at as someone who may be taking advantage of "The System" !  It has really become embarrassing.  They don't know that I will be having a fusion of neck shortly because of the injury.  But its OK.  I am a big old guy who is dumb and PROUD of who I am and who I was.  My kids still like me, I think, and my wife is still here so that must count for something.  The guys who did it right and who do it right now make it worth the effort.  Still tough at times but then again I may just be a wuss………………..

Wuss? Doubt that! Sometimes we get hurt. Sucks that we have to make excuses because of the few that wait around until they claim an injury.

The party most responsible for these bogus pensions is our elected officials, who failed to protect our tax dollars.

HOWEVER, that doesn't  change the fact that you are trash if you take a pension for which you are not qualified.  Just because someone stepped away from the till doesn't mean it's not stealing if you help yourself to its contents.
