They were firefighters

Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co. fire

I’m certain that until the very last seconds they thought he would pull it off. I do not think they were thinking about anything but the job in front of them, they were simply doing what their training allowed them to do.

The nearly impossible.

Firefighters die in the line of duty far too often, heroically or grom long, lingering and painful illnesses bred as a result of their heroics.

The problem with firefighters is we all think we’re going to live forever, until it is abundantly clear we will not. When the ultimate sacrifice is made, all other options have run out.

They wanted to come home, live their lives, be fathers, sons, brothers and friends.

But they couldn’t. They just couldn’t.

Because above all, they were firefighters.
